- Alanna of Trebond and Olau- “The Lioness”- a lady knight, and King’s Champion of Tortall
- Aled the Armorer- a humpbacked man, spies for George
- Alexander of Tirragen- Alanna’s old rival, he once beat Alanna in a fencing match, and though Alanna thinks the competition is friendly, Alex tries to kill her and aid Roger. Alanna eventually kills him.
- Alish- Townsperson who died of the sweating sickness
- Anci- Marek’s lady, gave them over to Claw because Claw told her they’d betrayed him to the provost (thus breaking Rogue law)
- Baird, Duke- Chief of Palace Healers
- Buriam Tourakom- Thayet’s servant, bodyguard and friend, she comes to Tortall with Thayet
- Cadao, Jian- 1st daughter of the goddess in the convent at Rachia, Thayet’s cousin
- Chitral- an elemental and a mountain, he and his brothers are fathers to the Gods; he made the Dominion Jewel. He appears to Alanna as a Rock Ape with a sword and fights a duel with her, giving her the Jewel in the end.
- Claw- the noble Ralon of Malven turned Rogue, tries to usurp George’s throne and aid Roger’s plot, all the while swearing fealty to George
- Coram Smythesson- Alanna’s companion and mentor, an old family servant who raised her and Thom from childhood, and accompanies her on her journeys
- Delia of Eldorne- Convinces Thom that really great sorcerers could raise the dead, is also plotting to put Roger on the throne.
- Dusan zhir Anudo- Decended from zhirit Krafam; rebels tried to put Dusan zhir Anudo on the throne 2 yrs before LR begins, and Thayet and Buri are running from him and his soldiers when Alanna meets them.
- Eleni Cooper- George’s mother; seeks refuge from Claw in Olau and falls in love with Myles
- Ercole- a knife master, trusted by George, he survives an attack from Claw.
- Faithful- Alanna’s cat given her by the Goddess, he has purple eyes
- Gareth of Naxen, Duke- Alanna can beat him in one out of three matches- he is the best swordsman in Tortall and Roald’s Prime Minister
- Gareth of Naxen, Sir- “Gary”- the younger, Jon’s Prime Minister
- Gaylah- Lady of Malven, Ralon’s mother
- Geoffrey of Meron- one of Alanna’s old friends
- George Cooper- King of the Rogue in Corus and Alanna’s lover
- Halam Fahrar- leads the Bazhir to meet Alanna in the city

- Joss- a man at the Wandering Bard, he has a voice that “shakes the rafters” (10)
- Kalasin- Thayet’s mother and wife of jin Wilima, killed herself the summer before LR begins.
- Kasi the Spy- assassin paid to kill Jon, Aled sells to him.
- Kuri Tailor- one of Eleni’s friends, a healer
- Liam Ironarm- the Shang Dragon, Alanna’s lover, killed defending Tortall
- Lianne, Queen- Jonathan’s mother and queen of Tortall, she dies

- Marek Swiftknife- a knife master, trusted by George, survives an attack from Claw
- Mi-chi- the “lady who sees” for the Doi Rockmouse people- she reads the hands of all in Alanna’s company

- Rispah- George’s cousin, (eleni’s niece) and a lady of the Rogue, Coram’s love
- Roald- King of Tortall, “A quiet man who preferred harmony”, he killed himself three weeks after his wife, Lianne, died
- Roger Conté, Duke- Jonathan’s cousin; Roger was killed by Alanna in a duel shortly after she receives knighthood, but resurrected by Thom; he tries to usurp the throne from Jonathan, but is killed a second time by Alanna
- Scholar- killed by claw’s people, a friend of Myles
- Shem- brother of Orem, among George’s most trusted, killed by Claw’s people
- Si-Cham- Thom’s old teaching master, 1st master order of Mithros, helps find a spell to try to cure Thom
- Solom- keeper of the dancing dove, killed by Claw’s people
- Stefan- an old friend, a hostler in the palace, and a spy for George
- Terez- One of Myles’ maids
- Thayet jian Wilma- Duchess of Camau and Thanhyien and oldest daughter of Adigun jin Wilima in Sarain, but she cannot inherit because she is a girl. She joins Alanna on her adventures and comes to Tortall to start a school, but instead falls in love with Jon
- Thom- a great magician and Alanna’s twin; he raises Roger from the dead on All Hallows, but gets sick and eventually dies of complications
- Timon- once duke Gareth’s personal manservant, now chief of the palace footmen
